The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also known as the BP oil spill/leak, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) is an industrial disaster that began on 20 April 2010 and was considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry.
A massive response ensued to protect beaches, and environment from the spreading oil utilizing skimmer ship and floating booms. Due to the months-long spill, along with adverse effects from the response and cleanup activities, extensive problems were felt throughout Louisiana, Mississippi , Alabama, Florida and Texas. Oil cleanup crews worked for weeks and miles of shore line across many southern states were affected.

Thousands of businesses in the hospitality and tourism industry felt the financial impact of this disaster and the fallout was far reaching and involved extensive investigation efforts on many levels.
